FLOWER DRAWINGS
by Carol Hoffnagle

I have been drawing, painting and photographing flowers for a long time. I enjoy working with line and color, and flowers seem to provide an endless and ever-changing supply of images to work with. I am particularly drawn to showy flowers like Birds-of-Paradise, Sunflowers and Tulips, as well as Pansies, which, despite their small size, have a strong presence. I try to give all flowers equal billing, no matter their actual size in nature.
Over the years I have used different media — batik, oil, photography, digital, graphite, China marker, crayon, relief print, etching — to render the flowers but now am concentrating on colored pencil. Applying many layers of pencil (and a lot of energy) on paper results in an almost painterly quality that reflects the essence of the flower.
My love of flowers is reflected solely in my artwork and not in my garden. Besides absolutely not having a green thumb, we have visiting deer and two housecats, Zuzu and Tessa, who chew on the leaves of anything green we bring home.
